The Afterlife Is Real and I Have Proof

I go to mediums. Mediums are people who can communicate with our dearly departed. I am taken when they come up with something they could never know, like a name. But this night I am writing about, my own daughter was the medium. If I ever doubted there is an afterlife, after this experience, all doubt was left in the dust.

My Daughter, The Medium

My daughter, Jessie, was sitting on my bed writing in her diary. It is a little book with a cat on the front. There’s a small piece of metal with two rings on it where a little padlock fits in the rings to lock up her secrets. Only Jessie had the key. While I was reading, Jessie decided to record the happenings of her day at camp in this diary.

I helped her spell some things – turtle, river, camp. Jessie was not so great at spelling, and she was dyslexic to boot, so she transposed many of her letters and wasn’t excelling at sounding out words either (she was also in speech therapy).

Here Comes the Proof

As Jessie was turning the pages of her diary, she said, ”Look, Mom, I wrote, I love Jennifer.

But as I looked at it, I saw something. It didn’t say, I love Jennifer. It said, I love Juanita.

Spelled perfectly. I LOVE JUANITA

I told Jessie, “That’s not my name. That doesn’t say I love Jennifer. It says, I love Juanita?”

Jessie said, “Who’s Jua-ni-na?”

“No, Jua-ni-ta,” I said.

No matter how many times I said Juanita, Jessie said, “Juanina,” and she said it like jua-ni-na – separate syllables – as if it was the strangest name she had ever heard. I had never referred to my grandmother by name to her; only by “grandma.”

Juanita is my grandmother’s name, and when Jessie wrote this, she had been passed away for three years.

“How did you know how to spell that?” I asked.

“It was in the air,” she explained. “I was in the living room, and someone was talking in the air and spelled it for me. They also told me, You are getting so big.”

“Did this happen today?” I asked.

“No, I wrote it before, when you were napping, and I was in the living room, and someone was talking to me and told me how to spell it. But I thought I was writing Jennifer.”

How It Feels To Have Your Grandmother Communicate From the Grave

In the past, Jessie had other supernatural communications. I am a believer enough that I didn’t dismiss her. I believe. But this is different. I’m so grateful my grandma is well and still talking to us from her place in the cosmos.

My life, like most lives, can be chaotic. I can worry and get caught up in my head. But when I stop and reflect on this communication between my daughter and my grandmother, I feel at peace. It gives me a sureness that there is something beyond this dense space we occupy. I take grace and peace where I can get it. And, in between the chaos, I find grace, in the form of my grandma telling a precious, and very intuitive, little girl to write three words: I love Juanita.
